Boxing Day?

Today is ‘boxing day’ in Canada. A consumer ritual where people spend their hard earned dollars on the ‘best deals’ of the year. The ‘best deals’ however are probably mediocre, and the time could be spent better elsewhere.
People wake up early just to line up in hopes for getting their goods cheap. But with time spent like that, much more could be done like:
- Sleeping in (your only saving a few dollars anyways)
- Working (you would probably make more than you can save lining up)
- Having another day of relaxing (shopping is highly stressful)
These consumer rituals brought out by corporations are clearly profit generating. It is perceived that you can save, but how much can you really save? Perhaps it is better to buy when you need, and not to participate in such a crazy scheme. After all, are you really going to use everything that you buy?
